Work-a-round your smtp outgoing email
Know this problem?
You have your laptop setup with your email address, which you got from your provider.
You are visiting a friend and you want to sent an email from your laptop via Outlook (or Thunderbird or…. or….).
Or you have a friend over, with his laptop, and he wants to send an email via Outlook…
BUT; you (and your friend) are not able to send an email; the problem seems to be something with “smtp-server” ….
Well, what is going on…..??
From your provider you received some information on “how to set up your email in Outlook (or Thunderbird or… or…)”.
They will give you SMTP server details – which you should use for sending email.
BUT; what they are forgetting to tell you; they block other providers to send email via the same line…
Short; you have an Orange account – your friend has an Chello account. Your Orange line is NOT going to accept sending email via the Chello SMTP (and vice versa).
Is there a way to make this work…??
Yep – there is = but is involving some work !
In this example I will call your provider “Orange” – but it could be any provider.
First; you make a new account on Gmail (yes – you can also use one you already have = BUT you are going to make some changes you probably don’t want to happen to that account).
You are going to use this account in Outlook (or Thunderbird….or….).
Gmail is giving a nice overview on how to do this overhere.
Once you have that gmail account running on your Outlook – you go back to your Gmail account online….;
You go to
- settings
- accounts
- at “send email as”
- you “Add another email address you own” = you fill in the name of your Orange email address.
- and also click the “Specify a different “reply-to” address” = again your Orange email address.
Then it will tell you it sent a code to that email address to make sure you do own that one…..
After that; in Outlook you make the Gmail smtp account your default “outgoing server”….
Now; what did we do…??
You told Gmail to always use your provider’s email address to be the “reply to”.
So from now on; your Outlook is sending email via the Gmail server – BUT will make it look like you sent it via your Orange provider.
So – if you would send me an email via your Outlook. And I would like in my inbox – it will show that you sent your email via Orange. And if I would hit “reply” – the reply would go to your Orange email address….!! And you will receive the answer in your normal inbox !!
So from now on; you are able to send an email from your friends house and nobody will notice you did use your (secret) Gmail account.

Well, whats worse? That or having your Outlook re-initialize everytime you open your PC and all your mails should be downloaded over and over? LOL! That’s my problem at work now and its total Hell! Ha!
well…itz hello
It’s a nice workaround, but seems a bit impractical… I don’t see why you want to send that one email thru Outlook, most providers offer a webinterface to send email, why not use that?
@Daisy – ooopf – that IS a problem = will see if I can find something about this…!
@ck_leick – have to say = just like your webpage; very Cryptic – lol
@Rudy – You have a good point – but some people really only work via Outlook – Thunderbird etc… for several reasons;
* people who use outlook at home; have their contact persons not saved on the webinterface… and someway it is hard to copy an email address and paste it….
* some people even do not know how to get to their webinterface – some do = but they can’t remember their password…..
* outlook has the nice html (fonts – colours etc etc) – easier to put pictures in – enclose attachements etc etc
Personally I have my email setup in a way – so ALL me email is redirected to my gmail….
But yeah – everybody has their own way….
