Vista 64bit; AVG went wrong – but found Avast!

avastTwo days ago – I installed Windows Vista 64-bit on my computer. As normally; a totally new installation is a lot of work. First a back up – really carefully deciding “what to keep” and “what can go”…..

But okay; Vista installed – then first the most important programs to install = Thunderbird – Firefox – Vista – Videocard drivers….. and then I wanted to download all the other stuff I need…
Nope; it stopped – I was not able to download anything anymore….. In the screen it did show the files coming in – but when I opened them; it would say the file wasn’t there….

Searching searching searching. Firewall off – Defender off – Virusscanner off – nothing would help….
Starting searching the internet….  searching for “vista not downloading” “download disappears” and then at one point I found something interesting. It seems that SOME people got this problem after installing AVG…. turning it off didn’t help…. only uninstall would help. I did that….. and YES – my downloads where working again.
Sad part is – I could not find anything to fix it and make AVG running….

Besides my Vista and Fruityloops – I am trying to only run free programs…. – so – started searching for a new virusscanner…
I found a real nice one…. “avast!” – runs nicely in the background – it checks the emails…. the files via messengers…. All kinds of different shields are running.
The only disadvantage I found; I was not able to find an option for a scheduled scan….

AND; as I was looking for a picture of “Avast!” = I googled for it – and at the top of my search there was a link to “Avast!” which got CAUGHT BY “AVAST!” for being a threat !!!

The first threat it finds…… is one with his own name = hilarious !!

The tip was; AVG makes download disappear

Homepage; Avast!

Download; Avast! & how to register and run it free

  1. I’ve been using Avast for years now. It’s my favorite free virusscanner out there. I’m kinda surprised you never heard of this one before! But good you finally did… ;)

  2. Well; AVG worked for me for years. And I really loved this program.

And probably I would not have searched for another virusscanner if this error didn’t came up…..

Btw; do you know if you can set up a scheduled scan…??

  3. A scheduled scan is only available in the Pro version, I think…

  4. [...] AVG(2)= article [...]

  5. I am LOVING Avast ! I love how the initial scan happens as the computer is booting up so you don’t have to go into safe mode. It was able to get rid of some nasty trojans over here that AVG, Superantispyware and Malware couldn’t ! Thanks for the tip !!

  6. Loving Avast-am getting it now for the laptop as well…I keep AVG but it intermittently get a CTF control file error when updating…EVENTUALLY it corrects itself but rather disconcerting to not be protected in the meantime so am running both…lol
