Dual Boot; change the order of boot

windowsbootAs you know; recently I also installed the beta version of Windows 7 on an extra hard disk.

I am using this Operating System just for testing programs and just to see how Windows 7 is working.
BUT; This also means that I have a dual boot.

Which means; at the moment I am starting the computer – I will get a screen which is asking which OS I want to start. I have 30 seconds to decide – after that it will just start the “default operating system”. Well; I didn’t tell my computer which default it should be – but it is just assuming I want to start Windows 7 after the 30 seconds…..
And nope; that is not something I want… !
My Windows XP is still the OS I prefer and I only want to start No.7 at the moments I am telling my system to do so!

So; I needed to change that default;

no11This is something you need to do in the LATEST OS you installed – for me that was the Windows 7
Next to the Windows Start symbol – you will go to the screen where you will also find Windows Explorer (not the browser !!)

no2

Select the Computer – and then Properties

no31

Go to the Advanced Tab and then at the Start & Recovery; Settings.

no4

Then at the Default Operating System; change that one to “Earlier Version of Windows”.

Restart the computer – and you will see; after 30 seconds (oooh – you can also change that period of time in the previous screen) it will start up the “old OS” instead of Windowns 7

  1. Nice tutorial… I will use this tip when i install windows 7 on my laptop

  2. Thanx !
    Enjoy Windows 7 – till now = I really do like it… !

  3. Windows 7 managed to annoy me in the first 5 minutes of use. Someone, please, tell the software designers in microsoft, to have a brain check or something! Starting with Vista, then office 2007, now windows 7, all have the same twisted way of hiding everything from the user, while eating all the computer’s resources. My processor’s fan already was turning at full speed and I didn’t even open any application. Just because of the damn interface! If it goes like this, windows Xp will be the master of my computer till the end of days (even linux seems now a better alternative than vista or “number 7″).

  4. Couldn’t change my choice of the double boot, originally I changed the order but forgot how- – -it was only a one step operation- – -87 stepped in,bb
